Heritable genome editing to prevent severe disease is a duty, not a transgression.

RGRosalind GrantRaised 13 Sept 2026

A national ethics council has recommended conditional approval of germline editing for a narrow set of monogenic conditions. The recommendation reframes the debate: no longer whether editing is unnatural, but whether withholding an available prevention from a future person can be justified.

The tension

The duty framing is strongest for monogenic lethality and collapses almost immediately outside it. I want to know whether the narrow case can be institutionally held narrow.

Every regime that promised a narrow indication widened it under demand. The relevant evidence is regulatory history, not molecular biology.
